AVID stands for advancement via individual determination. The Anacortes School district implemented this nationally recognized college preparatory program in 2008. The district now has an AVID elective class in each grade 7-12.
AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
AVID is a selective program that students are recommended to, apply and interview for. The majority of recruitment to the program happens at the end of the 6th grade year. Selected students remain in AVID throughout their years in middle and high school allowing the group to form tight bonds and a unique support system.
The AVID program challenges students to take responsibility for their education. We require our students to take challenging courses, to take good notes, and to set appropriate goals for themselves. In turn, the AVID program provides exceptional support and guidance for our students. In their elective class, AVID students learn about the expectations of colleges, practice study and note taking skills, receive mentorship and college advice, and tour college campuses throughout the state. Our goal is for all AVID students to be successful in high school, successful while pursuing higher education, and ultimately to become successful lifelong learners.
