The Anacortes School District is in compliance with Washington state’s vaccination mandate, which requires that all state employees be vaccinated against COVID19, or have an approved exemption, by October 18.

Out of the district’s 427 employees, four percent have been granted either a medical or religious exemption, and one employee resigned stating the mandate as their reason for resignation. All other employees have been fully vaccinated and have provided confidential proof of vaccination to the district’s Human Resources Department.

“I am grateful to our employees for complying with the state’s mandate,” said Superintendent Justin Irish. “I also want to thank our human resources department for working with our employees to gather this information, address concerns, and process exemption requests.”

Active substitutes will also need to submit proof of vaccination to remain on the district’s call list. Most of the district’s active substitutes have also met the vaccination requirement.

The district continues to recruit for substitutes to address staffing shortages in transportation, custodial, food services, and teaching. These shortages existed prior to the Governor’s mandate announcement.

Employees who have been granted an exemption will be required to adhere to additional safety measures, including double-masking, and regular, random on-site COVID testing, administered by the district’s HR department.

“I am also grateful to our community for continuing to follow health and safety guidelines,” said Irish. “We will get through this. Thank you for everyone’s continued partnership and support to keep students engaged socially and academically in school.”
