Clifford, Pohl, Gilbert, Miller

As Dr. Justin Irish takes the helm as the district’s new superintendent, and as the district plans for schools to reopen this fall amidst the coronavirus pandemic, the district has reorganized some of its leadership positions.

“This restructuring will help us meet one of my goals of redistributing leadership across the district, as well as achieve some cost savings,” said Superintendent Justin Irish. “I believe these changes will better align staff capacity while keeping student achievement and support a top priority.”

Assistant Superintendent

Becky Clifford, who was recently hired as the district’s Executive Director of Inclusion, will assume the role of Assistant Superintendent with the recent resignation of K.C. Knudson. Clifford will oversee the Teaching & Learning and Student Support Services Departments in order to align curriculum, reduce silos between departments, and ensure equity for all students.

Executive Director of Technology, Transportation, and Food and Nutrition Services

Robert Pohl will now oversee the transportation and food & nutrition departments, in addition to continuing to lead the technology department. Dave Cram, Executive Director of Finance and Operations, will take on some additional oversight of the Human Resources department to continue to ensure our financial stability.

Directors: Special Education & Inclusion and Teaching & Learning

Shannon Gilbert will become the district’s Director of Special Education & Inclusion. Gilbert has served as Assistant Principal at Island View Elementary, Principal at Whitney, and part-time support to the student support services department. She will continue to serve as director of Whitney, in addition to this new leadership role. She will support inclusionary practices for students receiving special education services.

Angie Miller will assume the role of Director of Teaching & Learning. Miller previously served as the district’s math coach, and brings a wealth of experience both as a classroom teacher and proven problem-solver to this new role.

High School Principal

The district is currently engaged in an open process to fill the Anacortes High School principal vacancy. Jon Ronngren recently took a position with the Mt. Vernon School District as their Director of Personnel and Human Resources. The district plans to fill the position by the end of July. A community forum with the top two candidates is scheduled for July 28 from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. via zoom (
