Long-time music educator Laurie Julius-Carver was selected as this year’s recipient for the Walter A. Brodniak Cultural Education Award for her consistent support of our district choir programs.

Julius-Carver has been an active music educator in Anacortes for more than 30 years. She has supported Anacortes middle and high school band and choir programs both in and out of the classroom. She recently helped prepare Anacortes students for league solo and ensemble competition, in which district students garnered critical acclaim.

“She is always willing to jump in,” said ASD choir director Carole Leander. “I couldn't do this job without Laurie on our team. I think 30 years of supporting music programs and children in Anacortes is a huge statement to her work ethic, love for this community and for the arts.”

The Walter A. Brodniak Cultural Education Award was created in 1977, upon Mr. Brodniak's retirement as Superintendent of the Anacortes School District, "to foster growth of the cultural arts in the District." The award is given each spring to a student, faculty member, administrator, school director, community member or community organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the cultural arts in the Anacortes School District during the current school year.

The community is invited to a reception to honor Julius-Carver’s contributions on Thursday, May 16 from 5 to 5:45 p.m. at the Anacortes High School Commons. The program will begin at 5:15 p.m. and light refreshments will be served.
