Superintendent received high marks in evaluation

Anacortes School District Superintendent Justin Irish received high marks from the Anacortes School Board in his first evaluation. Irish successfully navigated the district through the coronavirus pandemic in his first year as superintendent, while maintaining a focus on high student achievement and realigning district systems. 


“We know this was an incredibly difficult year for our families, students, and staff,” said Board President Bobbilyn Hogge. “Dr. Irish and his team successfully responded to the challenges that the pandemic posed. We also appreciate his commitment to continuing high achievement levels for all students.” 


The board highlighted several achievements over the past year, including: 

  • Proactive efforts addressing the extenuating challenges created by COVID-19 in order to best ensure student access to quality education and engagement while intentionally addressing various student, staff and family needs and concerns. 

  • Continual, clear communication in response to the pandemic.  

  • Development of the virtual ASD@Home program.  

  • Continued focus on equity.  

  • Fiscal responsibility and management, as evidenced by a clean audit.  

  • Navigating a financially challenging year without significant staff reductions. 

  • Increased family outreach.  

  • Continued commitment to quality instruction, student well-being, and student achievement.  


“I am grateful to the board, our community, district staff, and our students for their support and patience in this challenging year,” said Superintendent Irish. “I am proud of the work our district has accomplished together. I look forward to putting the most challenging aspects of the pandemic behind us, and moving forward in support of our students and families.” 


In their evaluation, the board noted areas of opportunity moving forward, including: 

  • Focus on the key performance outcomes of the district strategic plan to ensure rigorous academics through quality instruction for all students. 

  • Address lost teaching and learning due to COVID. 

  • Continue to prioritize an inclusive open culture for families, students, and staff. 

  • Support the implementation and training of newly adopted curriculum

  • Continue to analyze and address supporting students in Special Education. 

  • Increase focus on and support of students diagnosed with Dyslexia. 


The superintendent’s evaluation is aligned with the district’s strategic plan, and annual goals that are set each year.
