Anacortes Superintendent Mark Wenzel received a “distinguished” rating in his annual evaluation from the Anacortes School Board. The superintendent’s rating represents a scored evaluation of district performance on each of the five pillars in the strategic plan

The pillars are: Quality Instruction and Curriculum, Social-Emotional Learning, Partnerships, Equity, and Stewardship. Each pillar includes annual goals for the year that drive and focus the work of the district.

Accomplishments for the 2018-19 school year include:

  • intentional focus to develop a meaningful equity policy that will lead to a greater understanding and commitment to address inequities in our district;

  • continued commitment to quality instruction and staff development, including a successful review and alignment of middle and high school social studies curriculum and visioning for Cap Sante High School;

  • implementation of social emotional learning, including suicide prevention in middle and high school, and social emotional learning programs at elementary and secondary schools;

  • successful implementation of an expanded summer school program, with community contributions, to serve elementary students in need of academic support;

  • fiscal responsibility and management, as evidenced by a clean audit;

  • willingness to solicit and incorporate stakeholder, community, student and family input and feedback on issues such as school start times;

  • successful transition to a new high school building for staff and students;

  • continued careful oversight of the timeline and budget of the final phase of the high school construction project, including advocating on the district’s behalf to mitigate delays and the impacts those delays cause to the schedule and budget.

  • Strong communication with staff, students, families and community, and a willingness to respond to feedback and make a course correction when needed

“Dr. Wenzel continues to demonstrate excellent leadership for our district,” said board president Bobbilyn Hogge. “In partnership with other administrators and staff, he has supported the district in making significant gains on the work considered most important by the board. We’re proud of the strong leadership in our district and see direct benefits to student learning and well-being.”

Hogge noted increased graduation rates and strong state assessment scores as further evidence of district success, while acknowledging the importance of district equity work to ensure success for all students.

Wenzel expressed gratitude for the commitment of staff across schools, as well as the community’s support for students.

“Anacortes is truly a special place,” he said. “We have great kids and families, and we have an incredibly dedicated staff who completely invest themselves in our students. I’m also grateful for our community’s outstanding support for schools and their belief that all children can succeed.”

Wenzel recently completed his sixth year with the Anacortes School District. This will be his final year in Anacortes, as he has accepted a job as superintendent with an international school in Singapore beginning with the 2020-21 school year. The school board will conduct a superintendent search process with active stakeholder engagement this year.
