The Skagit Valley YMCA has been selected to take over the Anacortes School District’s pre-school program beginning with the 2019-20 school year. The YMCA was selected following an open, competitive process.

Earlier this spring, the district made the difficult decision to end its district-run, tuition-based preschool program due to budget constraints. Since that time, several groups had shown interest in taking over the program.

The YMCA was selected based on several factors including the ability to provide high-quality, low-cost instruction to students and the ability to meet state licensing qualifications. In addition to the pre-school program which will serve children ages 3-5, the YMCA will also reinstate its popular “toddler program” serving children ages 18 months to 2 ½ years. Several years ago, the district had to discontinue the “toddler program” due to the need for district classroom space. At that time, the YMCA was given the first opportunity to reinstate the program should classroom space become available in the future.

This new YMCA pre-school will be using Washington Early Learning and Development Guidelines which provide indicators of developmentally appropriate practices and success for kindergarten readiness.

“We know that providing high quality learning opportunities at an early age is a key factor in student success,” said Superintendent Mark Wenzel. “I’m pleased that we are able to partner with the YMCA to bring quality education to our future students.”

The YMCA will begin accepting applications for the programs on July 1.

The district and the YMCA plan to finalize a contract for the classroom lease later this summer.
