One of the great things about the end of a cross country season is that our runners are in close to, if not the, best running shape of their lives. Getting in good running shape is hard! The best way to be in shape for whatever comes next (like AMS Track & Field in the spring!) is to not get out of shape now that XC is over!
However, that is easier said than done, especially during the upcoming winter season. One of the hardest things to do is get out the door, especially when it is chilly or raining sideways. It is a lot easier if you're not doing it alone. That is where the AMS/AHS Running Club steps in. Started a few years ago by some ambitious AHS runners that wanted to run and advance their fitness over the winter months, we meet M-W-F, ready to run at 3:00pm in Room E-010 at AHS on days there are school starting November 4th, and continuing until the start of the spring sports season.
A few words on how this is different from AMS XC of T&F:
We are first and foremost a running community - we meet to support each other in our common goal of enjoying running and advancing our fitness.
There are no prescribed/required runs or workouts - once you're here, you are welcome to do your own thing. You will never be told how far or fast you have to run. However, we are happy to offer advice ranging from good places to run to full training plans. It really is up to you!
The group will not necessarily stay together - the club can include anyone from AMS athletes who are still pretty new to running to some of our most competitive AHS athletes who will likely run in college. Athletes are encouraged to run distances and paces that are appropriate for them. This requires autonomy from most of our runners at least some of the time.
There is a lot less direct monitoring from the club advisor(s) than from the coaches during the AMS XC and T&F seasons. We will actively communicate with all of our runners so we know where they are headed, and make sure they are choosing safe running routes.
Runners may store their bags in the AHS main office until it closes at 4:00. If anyone anticipates not being back in time to retrieve their stuff, several of our AHS club members are often ready and willing to allow other club members to store their bags in their cars while they run.
If you are interested in the club, you may sign up through Final Forms. There is no fee, but there is a waiver to sign.
Let me know if you have any questions!
