Fidalgo Kindergarten Speech and Language Screenings
During this time, all five of our dedicated SLPs—Jessica Sturgeon, Miranda Blake, Nicky Carubia, Megan Nash, and Katie Forsman—will be visiting Fidalgo Elementary School to screen each kindergarten student for any speech and language concerns.
Each screening will take approximately 10-15 minutes and will be conducted through one-on-one interactions between an individual student and an SLP. These screenings are crucial as speech and language development are closely tied to literacy development. We use these screenings to monitor any kindergarten students who may need additional support.
For instance, if a student has difficulty pronouncing the “L” sound (e.g., saying “wion” for “lion”), they may also struggle with recognizing the sound “L” makes in written words. Additionally, if a student is having trouble adapting to new classroom routines, we want to ensure they understand the new language and vocabulary being introduced. As we all know, there is a lot to learn in kindergarten!
