Regular school attendance is crucial for your child's success. Teachers develop lessons that focus on much of the learning taking place during class.  Everyday your child is absent makes it difficult for him/her to learn the content they need to be successful.

The following information pertains to individual absences due to appointments, illness, etc. For extended planned absences (3 or more days), please complete the top portion of the Pre-Planned Absence Form, have your student complete the bottom section by obtaining signatures from all 6 of their teachers, and return to the AMS Attendance Administrative Assistant.

Notifications

There are several ways to notify us if your child will be absent.

If your child is absent from school, please call 360-503-1248 or email amsattend@asd103.org to report the reason for the absence, if possible the day of the absence.  Parent/Guardian must call/email within 48 hours of the absence. If no call/email is made within 48 hours, the absence will remain unexcused.  Any unreported absence or an absence that does not meet the criteria for an excused absence will automatically be an unexcused absence.  A school principal or designee has the authority to determine if an absence meets the criteria for an excused absence.  Please read Anacortes School District Excused and Unexcused Absences Procedure here.

If a secondary student has ten or more excused absences within the current school year, administrators may request a meeting and additional documentation for the absences.

Obtaining Missed Work

Homework for specific teachers may be accessed on-line through Schoology, or Skyward Family Access. It is the student's responsibility to make arrangements to make-up all missed work, including labs.

Tardiness

Students are not allowed to loiter in the halls and then run to class. Passing time is intended to provide for an orderly move from one class to another. Students can expect to be assigned lunch detention by the Office after every third tardy.

Students who arrive late to school are to report to the office for an admit slip.  If a student misses more than half the period, it becomes either an excused or unexcused absence.

Early Dismissal

A written request or a phone call (to 503-1230) must be relayed to the Main Office stating the time of dismissal requested and the reason the dismissal is needed. Early dismissals are often used for doctor or dentist appointments.  Notes should be taken to the office before school on the day the dismissal is desired.  Please note that we will release students only to parents/guardians or individuals that have been listed as an emergency contact for their child with a valid ID.

Students Arriving to School Late

Students must check in at the attendance office first thing when they arrive late to school.  At the attendance office they will receive a pass to go to class.

Showing up to class everyday on time helps students on their path to success in middle school. Understanding the importance of good attendance will help them in high school, college and at work in the future.
